I'm not sure quite how to introduce myself, but I guess I can try.

I'm a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, studying linguistics with a combined B.A./M.A. program which I'll finish in a year or two, after I decide on a thesis topic and do it. I'm a generalist, though - I've finished all the classes for the minor in computer science, I've taken enough classes to have a minor in German, but CU won't let people get two minors unless they also get two majors. In any event, I'll be getting a certificate in cognitive science, which is an interdisciplinary thing between the linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and computer science departments.

I'm the current organizer for the Boulder Linux Users Group and kicked off a branch of the Hacking Society, I play jazz piano, and enjoy drawing and writing.

I run OS Kitchen, LLC, but it's a rather dormant operation at the moment since my main energies are in keeping my head above water (anybody hiring? Will code or document for food,) trying to keep up with academics, and spending time with my girlfriend. Gotta have priorities, after all.

I guess why I'm actually posting here is because I'm quite intrigued by the Wiki concept, and I think it'd be a great way to foster a little more discussion with some of my friends who're rather long-distance and end up reading my weblog, were I to install a Wiki on my website.

The thing is, I'd like to make hybrid pages - half static, content I put up that can't be changed by other people (yes, I know this seems like blasphemy, but I'm talking about a wiki on a personal website - I think it makes more sense in that context) and half Wiki. If anyone can recommend a wiki engine that allows for this sort of thing, I'd appreciate it. I wouldn't mind letting people create new Wiki pages in my personal site. I just want to have editorial control over a certain amount of relatively static content and let it flow around that.

For instance, I'd like to be able to post my movie reviews and let people Wiki below it. I could respond, new pages could thread off, but that particular branch would be started by the static movie review. If I were to get rid of the static content, the Wiki could remain in its place.

Is this reasonable? Is a Wiki what I want? Because it really feels like I want something of a hybrid between Slashcode and Wiki. Any comments? I wish I could decide on which page would be a better place to ask this question, but I figure someone will find this through RecentChanges.

UseModWiki will let you lock editing on a page. This isn't a perfect solution, as it doesn't let you have static and editable content on the same page, but it could be a place to start. For more information, look at UseMod:AdminFeatures. -- MossCollum

I'm currently working to implement such a feature in the Wiki:ProWikiSoftware. If you don't mind to discuss, use or test in German wikis, please contact me at DseWiki:HelmutLeitner or BücherWiki:HelmutLeitner. -- HelmutLeitner

Bother. It'll be a little while before I can look into this very much. I hate sparcs. Time to look into slightly better hosting before I can get much further on this...
