Google stunned the Internet with their quite dramatic map service in early 2005. What distinguishes this map service from others, such as MapQuest?, are a number of simple yet critical aspects:
- Searchable. Google has long since understood addresses on websites; search for things in the normal Google fashion and Google Maps will tell you where it is. e.g. Map:"kart racing, Toronto, ON"
- Scripted. The user interface is dynamic; you can scroll around and zoom without having to reload the page.
- Legibility. Map text is very clear and easy to read.
- Satellite images. Google has merged their survey maps with satellite images acquired from KeyHole?.
