One subclass of CyberCartography is the indirect SocialNavigation measure of traffic flows through the digital space. There have been a wide number of efforts to make this time-dimensioned data class visualized or auralized for the perception of network administrators. Benefits would be to know when traffic is spiking, such as due to a DenialOfService attack or from the SlashdotEffect, and thus giving administrators the heads up to react. Less real-time benefits include optimizing investment in the network to only the heavily loaded sections. Sociological analysis also benefits from understanding how people use the network over time. Maps of traffic either reflect the network topology or the underlying terran geography or both; sometimes a visualization of the network is embedded in a geographic map. Interesting research follows.
