Burning Man is a week-long arts and culture festival held every year since 1991 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.
Burning Man has a number of precepts that are cogent from the point of view of OnlineCommunities. Many people involved in online communities in California are Burning Man participants; concepts fold back and forth from one to the other.
- Self-sufficiency. The Black Rock Desert regularly gets temperatures over 110 degrees fahrenheit in the summer, with little or no atmospheric moisture. All attendees are expected to protect themselves from the elements, and to bring enough food, water, and other necessities to survive.
- No Spectators. Attendees at the festival are expect to bring or do something. According to Burning Man canon, "spectators" are dangerous, in that they don't feel ownership of the event, and thus feel more comfortable trashing things, stealing, etc. Instead, attendees are expected to participate in some way.
- Radical self-expression. Large-scale fire art, nudity, explosions, and other dangerous activities are commonplace at Burning Man.
