A preliminary statement of intended direction in BrainstormMode (at least for now.)
The extent to which such boundaries are recognized, respected, defended or enforced, may well be one of the forces that affects the size of a community, and its ability to grow. Examples include;
- the page NameSpace probably the structural technical framework
- The page NameSpace adopted within a community
- If I understand the additional technical framework point, it suggests that the technology of the WikiEngine that is in use at a particular site impacts the way Names and the resulting NameSpace can be created. In fact, the technology of the engine does fact a dramatic effect as is evident in comparing the types of pages that can be created with the 'spartan' markup of Wiki:WardsWiki and that supported here. Reflecting on this, I beging to think that this is a major force affecting a community since it certainly biases which of the sites I participate in, I post certain Content in. (e.g. no internal anchors at c2, generally leads to shorter pages that they 'essay' style created here.
- 'OffTopic' content boundaries are one of the defining characteristics of a community (SocialBoundary?)
- type of real world target group (a project group or class with a given social structure, an organisation that adapts its culture, a customer relationship situation, open community for special interest, ...)
- Goal types (some product, supporting a project, building a social system, ...)
- Activity levels, as evident in the frequency of RecentChanges
- PageStyles? supported by the operational wiki engine technology and adopted by those authors that are members of the community.
- known ConflictHistory?
Notes;
- Ideally, 'target group' and 'Goals' and will be evident in a wiki's MissionStatement.
