AaronPoeze: Do you mean something like mind mapping? [Freemind] I think this would be something fun for you to use. Would be good to create one together in a wikiway.

FridemarPache: As far as I know, Free Mind is only a client tool. The IHMC solution offers both (also for free) a local client and a server-based Social software (nearly like a wiki: WhatIsaWiki ). Besides that, IHMC realizes semantic triples with multimedia nodes, even embedded videos.

AaronPoeze: What exactly are semantic triples?

FridemarPache: These triples (A,v,B) are the basic building blocks for the Semantic Web as realized in the IHMC concept maps, with ((text-)labeled) nodes A,B and ((text-)labeled) verbs v. We can interpret them as sentences with the following syntax elements: subject A, predicate v and Object B. The nice thing of semantic triples is, that they allow Syntax Sharing, i.e. for any two triple(t)s A1v1B1, A2v2B2 , we can equate A1=A2 or A1=B1 or A1=B2 or B1=B2 or v1=v2 in any combination.

AaronPoeze: So semantic is about the structure being standardised and therefore includes self explaining? Triples is the AvB? where concept A is connected to B via verb or verbiage v? I'm not understanding what is innovative here. I read the terms but am far from a legal expert. As it appears use is free of charge, the license appears to be a fairly standard commercial one. It's not clear to me who owns the information however, which is the only obvious concern. A less obvious concern is the idea of using this structure can create a dependency on it which could be unhelpful should the terms be changed, for example, to charge for the use.

FridemarPache: As I faintly remember there was also somewhere hidden an additional software that ex-ports the cmaps into a standardised w3org syntax, I have no problems to invest collaborative work into IHMC maps content. But anyhow, I am going to ask the admin of the CmapsForum to (hopefully) overcome those concerns.

FridemarPache: If somebody here likes to drill into the formal language s/he can have a look at [W3Org:GraphSyntax]. For math minds it might also be interesting, that we can use IHMC maps for building a better MathPlanet? in the sense of PolyMath? (GlobalBrain). Think of a browsable and joint-editable MathMap? with (not only) known and established definitions, lemmas, theorems, corrollarys, heuristics, proofs, problems, animations but also new problems that attract to be incrementally solved in the community. (It goes without saying that Math fonts for the standards are already in the package and arrows take the role of implications).

NathanielThurston: Fridemar, I'm hoping for something very simple and server-side as proof-of-concept for the early versions. CMaps seem like they may well be of use down the road; and I also like them as a way to model the issues.

FridemarPache: Nathaniel, do you refer with "very simple" to a graphical solution?

NathanielThurston: Only a little bit -- I don't want to overwhelm people with too much information. For an example of what I mean, see the ascii-art diagram of the revision tree on the [history page] for the sandbox at the test wiki.

FridemarPache: Aaron, it might be also of interest for you, because the KEA assures that invested time in coding CMaps is not lost. All y/our mapping work can be saved on our personal computers and even as a special XML, called CXL, conforming to W3C OWL recommendations/standards.

Meanwhile we have this start problem solved and need urgently collaborators to expand [this Cmap] to (hopefully zillion :-) other bilinked Cmaps. You might want to read [Ihmc:HelpManual], which contains also video tutorials.
