For a technical definition of exponential growth visit WikiPedia:Exponential_growth.

Many technologies experience exponential growth, and Wiki is not immune from this. The web and the Internet have experienced as does the human population. Most of the web sites were created in the last two years, most of the Wiki pages on a wiki were created in the last year. Most of the human race is alive right now. This is because exponential growth sees a doubling effect over periods of time.

Most of the human race is alive right now.

Only about 1/15 of all the people who have ever lived are still alive today, according to http://rdrop.com/~cary/html/bignums.html#people . Is there an error in that calculation ?

If we could restrict this to some smaller group -- scientists, or Christians, or slaves, or glasses-wearers, or computer programmers, or computer-users, or English-speakers, or perhaps even mathematicians -- I wouldn't be surprised to learn that of all of that group that have ever lived, most of them are alive today.
