This was part of a big economic push by the Japanese. They'd put government money and mindshare into industries, and eventually the whole economy gets built up. The process was Iron -> Shipbuilding -> Electronics -> Automobiles -> Computing. It fell down with their focus on ArtificialIntelligence.
