= Welcome to the dusty archives. =

Thank you for coming, and thank you for your persistence in getting here. The purpose for this page is a holding place for some dreadful junk, before I truly decide to toss it out. Thus the #redirect, designed as a SoftSecurity barrier ;-)

don't let the rabble talk amongst themselves

are there access level communities (like SlashDot and KuroShin) which have a low level stratum for provisional visitors (like /. & K5), but which don't reveal comments made their peers except to higher level folks? Certainly would eliminate the squabbling amongst the peasants which is usually the bulk of the noise. This simple provisional hiearchy could even be extended to multiple levels, with each level getting to read those below their level, and those above, but not their peers. (eeek!)

Any refereed forum is like this to some degree, except the upper stratum is fixed. Academic journals as well as moderated newsgroups and mailing lists, for instance.

However:

  • the lower stratum does get to read their peer's comments (albeit after moderation)
  • there are usually far fewer moderators/referees
  • the implied reward for getting "promoted" to referee is being able to influence what the peasants read, and not access to more reading matter
  • the more dramatic dynamics would play out if there was a hierarchy of many levels (not just two)

[later] um, just realised that unless there is a special case handling for the highest level, they won't be able to see their peer's postings either. Yikes - there is a punishment for being promoted at any level ... you lose the ability to read all the comments by those that are now your peers.
