The [GNU General Public License] (GPL) is a FreeSoftware license originally written by RichardStallman, for the GNU project. The first version of the GPL was released in January, 1989. The GPL lets users use software for any purpose, study and modify it, and redistribute and release modified versions to the public. All derivative works of software licensed under the GPL must be released under the GPL.
