A portable computer that is more portable than a laptop. There are currently three major types on the market: EPOC, PalmOS and WindowsPowered. The term is almost equivalent to PalmTop or PersonalDigitalAssistant? (aka PDA).

I'm not sure if there are any for sale yet, but there have been handhelds demoed which can run any x86 OS (windows, linux, etc). [tiqit's eightythree] is an example.

I've heard of the EPOC, but the only site I've seen mention of them, PDAMD.com, stopped mentioning them, so I figured they're dead. Newton could've been on the list, but that is definately dead hardware.

The hugely popular Nokia 9210 and 9240 use EPOC, so it's definitely still around. It underwent a name change to Symbian, which may have caused your confusion.

...and seems to be far more successful in Europe than USA....perhaps to do with how pagers and mobile phones have taken off in the respective territories...SonyEricsson? P800 due out soon is Symbian-based as well....
