Mac OS followed Lisa, which ran on hardware that was just too expensive for the market (~$10,000?). MacOs lasted from version 1 to version 9 and was then replaced, by MacOsx, a completely different system based on a unix kernel, new interface, and many other new features. Most MacOs software runs on MacOsx.
