Turnbull, D. (1994) Maps are territories: Science is an atlas. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. ISBN 0226817059 (alternate, search)

Seminal. Turnbull inverts the standard separation of maps as objective Cartesian simplification of the external space and claims that maps not only define territory, but internalize a notion of territory within us. That is, maps are language, and language as thought, maps and thought are not as segregated as mythicized. And then... can they lead to new thoughts?
