A Symmetric Cipher uses the same key for both encryption and for decryption. Examples include DES, Blowfish and TwoFish.

Symmetric ciphers tend to be faster than PublicKeyEncryption, but do not address so well KeyDistribution. In cases where key distribution poses little or no danger to the successful implementation of the cryptosystem, symmetric ciphers are less complex and therefore preferred.
