A platform for
HandHeld or
PalmTop computing. The thing that makes
PalmOS work is called Grafitti, and it is a sort of computer-readable shorthand, which turns out to be simpler and easier than real
HandwritingRecognition, as sported by the
AppleNewton, which was neat, ahead of its time, and doomed. The current competition of
PalmOS is
MicroSoft's
PocketPC (former
WindowsPowered, formerly
WinCE).
The reason it is called Palm instead of PalmPilot is that the Pilot Pen Company sued for infringement of copyright, and so while about everyone else calls them PalmPilots, Palm can't. I try to not use that term, but I haven't decided on a consistent replacement.
