Google launched in Sept 2009 a new AnnotationWiki, that has the potential to glue all public Web pages and CommunitiesThatScale via host wikis. Now, in TwitteR too, http://twitter.com/googlesidewiki.

Google has announced that it will be shutting GoogleSideWiki as of 2012-12-05. -- HansWobbe

Wikipedia claims that Google Sidewiki will be discontinued in 2011.[1]

As it already allows and generates links, it appears superior to the GoogleSearchWiki.

GoogleSearchWiki misses important properties of a wiki as described in Wiki:WikiPrinciples, however it makes a very convenient community tool by its syndication to social networks (Twitter, Facebook, blogs).

To make GoogleSideWiki more like a real Wiki, we can use the following technique as a workaround:

 Write a contribution  in any wiki which has a rich LinkLanguage 
 vocabulary in CamelCase , take a text-only copy (of some 
 subset) of it and paste this as annotation to an appropriate 
 page in the web. At the end of your SideWiki comment add as  
 link:

 Visit the host wiki of this annotation to have all CamelCase 
 words resolved as links.

A special case of this suggested workaround is making exactly this contribution a SideWiki annotation.

Of course there can be more than one SideWiki comments as demonstrated by this response to Hans:

JuanmaMP: I think it is not really a wiki, sidewiki is like a business tag; rather it makes any page as a blog: GoogleSideBlog?

Hans, Juanma what about leaving similar annotations on SideWiki. This has the advantage, that we can expand our build talk to a global level, increasing the chances, that we get addiditional builders for our BuildTalk.

BTW do you know the ReframeIt? service, which is similar to SideWiki: e.g. http://reframeit.com/comments/BOrhxAb94a5 as another annotation/snapshot of this page?

You're quite welcome, Fridemar. I will likely only be lurking a bit though. It seems to me that there are just far too many emerging "wannabe"s launching these types of applications just now, so I'm going to sit on the sidelines rather than joining this particular "gold rush". -- HansWobbe

Some Observations

GoogleSideWiki...
- does not function unless the Google Toolbar is active.
- will not annotate "localhost" pages (unlike ReframeIt?,(which does not (yet) have an Edit function for its posts)).
- Clicking on a SideWiki comment, leads very conveniently to the special annotated part. I still don't know, how SideWiki handles changed or even deleted parts...

It may be interesting to assess the extent to which this GoogleSideWiki technology appeals to a group of wiki veterans like those that post at this MeatBall community. -- HansWobbe

FridemarPache: Thank you Hans for your note to give this annotation system of Google more focus. You was one of those early adopters of DiiGo, TrailFire, AmpliFy, ClipMarks, TiddlyWiki, GoogleSearchWiki, etc. that can help to glue communities on a global base. I put a copy of my response to GoogleSideWiki as annotation of this page, which syndicates it to Twitter and other social networks. Do you have a Twitter account, to honor your lines with an RT? Are there other people here, who know to appreciate GoogleSideWiki?

HansWobbe: Yes, I do have a twitter account, but I do NOT use it from any mobile phone. In an effort to be consistent with my wiki practices, its http://twitter.com/HansWobbe

After all, it is becoming apparent that CellPhones? will evolve to include (at least) functions such as MyElectronicWallet? & MyMedicalRecords?, both of which will be weakened by letting folks know what your cell phone number is (at least until mobile phones have better ways of filtering incoming calls).

Drawback: I would prefer some kind of embedded result, instead of another bar. I do not like to have more bars on the display, since Google Toolbar must be active.

FridemarPache: Juanma, as a Perl programmer, it might be appealing for you to adapt the Open Sourced Annotation program CritOrg, that doesn't need another bar and is much more powerful than GoogleSideWiki. Interested? By the way, the friendly and ingenious author is meanwhile an employee at Google.

JuanmaMP: Fridemar, if it's open source, it's Perl (and doesn't need bar), sure I like it. I'll see if I can get some code for wiki with this, too. You are a source of wisdom and help!.
